Sunny California

The internet here in America is shocking (really!) so no pictures just yet but H will pop some on real soon (I'm talking like an American already!). At the moment we are in a little town called Midpines which is just near Yosemite National Park where we have spent the last couple of days. We did an amazing trek today up to the top of one of the highest waterfalls in the world. The view was so spectacular; Yosemite valley was carved by glaciers eons ago and it just takes your breath away looking at it. Unfortunately we have to leave here in the morning and head to San Francisco but we could spend days just exploring the valley.

But what have we been doing for the last week or so I hear you ask? Well, we started in San Diego and checked out the zoo there which was brilliant. The Polar Bears were our favourite, we couldn't find the kiwis in their house and we now know why Pandas are dying out - because they're soooo lazy and don't do anything all day (let alone procreate)! Whilst in San Diego we took the opportunity to go to Tijuana, Mexico for the day and it was brilliant. We just strolled over the border and didn't see anyone official at all (coming back was a bit different - obviously!). We had proper Mexican food for lunch and bought some horrid tacky souvenirs because we thought we should!

After San Diego we headed to LA and spent a night in Hermosa Beach which was beautiful. We watched the surfers first thing in the morning. Brave boys, it looked cold! And whilst in LA we went to Disneyland which was so much fun. You just have to throw yourself into it and we did. We checked out a fair few rides and I even got some Mickey Mouse ears to wear on my head in the style of a pirate (a la Pirates of the Caribbean).

We then headed up to Big Sur which is everything the books tell you it is. It was the most spectacular piece of coastline I've ever seen (and H kept stopping the car at every opportunity for photo shots!). We stayed overnight in a little cabin in Big Sur town and it was just divine. Rumours of a Mountain Lion were all around town but we didn't see it thankfully.

Before we got to Midpines we spent two nights in Monterey at the top of Big Sur and did some diving in the Pacific. It was quite cool but well worth it. H saw this huge cod, apparently the size of a dining table (..and although I can't confirm that because I didn't see it the dive master supports the story so we do have an independent witness!). The sea was full of Kelp too and that was really cool to swim through.

Which brings us to Midpines and where I started... The weather here is amazing (about 80 degrees F - they don't do Celsius here) and our car is brilliant and treating us well. We're lookingforward to Alcatraz on Saturday night and the Napa wine region on Sunday. H will post some photos when we get the chance and if you're lucky you might get to see me in Mickey Mouse ears.

This website right here is sort of a travel blog. A work in progress where I [howard] get to show off my photography skills and she [Alison] gets to be all poetic. This also serves as a service of sorts; keeping the world up to date with our various quests. Our first journey for this blog will start next Wednesday, 18th April. We are going to be driving up the coast of California, catching some pre-summer rays whilst taking in the view. To see some adventures from our recent travels, follow the link under "Places to go" down the right side of this page.
